| Stem Cell Sites and Summits |

My PI recently asked me to go to stemcellresources.org, check it out and report back on the goods. I am happy to report that stemcellresources.org, aside from being easily navigable and well organized, contains networking opportunites, multimedia presentations (I like the podcasts, personally) and links to established resources and information in a field that continues to shape the way we humans think of health and disease. The main goal of SCR is to connect people; and they are already making great strides. Started as a project of the Biology Teachers Association of New Jersey, they quickly broadened their scope and became a division of Bioscience Network, a publisher of online science education materials. In addition they have now been recognized by the NIH, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Association of Biology Teachers as a provider of educational resources for the stem cell community. Surfing this site I was reminded of a talk I attended not long ago. Jan Nolta, Director of UC Davis' Stem Cell Program, gave a lecture to a few of us budding flow cytometrists on stem cell-mediated repair of damaged tissues. Her talk highlighted the vast opportunities that are being explored, provided some details on a few factors and co-factors that stem cells provide in tissue regeneration, and gave a glimpse of the future (and a few blueprints of Davis' Stem Cell Center set to open in Fall '09). Throughout the talk she underscored the need for collaboration and education. In my opinion, stemcellresources.org is just the type of site to further the goals of Nolta and others. Stemcellresources.org covers all aspects of stem cells, which is fitting given the ubiquity of those cells. From policy, ethics and science, to the people responsible for driving the content of those debates and discoveries, to helping the next generation understand the complexities and responsibilities regarding stem cells, this site has something for all. One last thing I noticed while there was the upcoming World Stem Cell Summit in Madison, WI. Sept. 22-23. If you work fast, you can still get an abstract in by the deadline Aug. 18th. If not, check out their site for virtual updates from the summit and, of course, the trickle down from the meetings, speeches and poster presentations. I would continue to go on about the stemcellresources.org...but I wouldn't do it justice. You should go there and differentiate it for yourself. |
